Having arrived back at my sister’s house in the Lake District and it being a bit of a grey drizzly day, we have set off for a little low level walk along Little Langdale. The lad is very excited about us taking in the ‘Cathedral Cavern’ part of the local slate quarries and the little through trip – for which we have brought head torches along with us. The cavern is forty feet high with an impressive central pillar raising knife like, spitting it in two. In fact he enjoyed it so much that we had to do it all again a second time.

A4 This sketch shows the central pillar in the cavern with light coming in from the ‘window’ above. I used a graphite stick for this sketch, so that I could get lots of dark down quick.
