Oil Sketch

This post is of two pictures that I did for the friendly Newton St Cyres Art Group. I was giving a demonstration of some of my sketching techniques. Firstly I started with a quick chat about perspective – everyone’s favourite! However, I think it is essential to have a knowledge of, to be able to quickly draw landscapes. Especially street scenes etc.

The sketch above is working quickly in oils. Trying to pull everything together in the time that I had ~ Phew ~ Only just made it!

Watercolour sketch of Coverack Harbour.

Watercolour Impression

The next was a lively sketch of Coverack Harbour. Laying down first some watercolour washes and whilst they were still wet, working into them with a black watercolour pencil. Letting the pencil marks bleed as it reacted with the water.
I also added a little brown chalk pastel in the foreground. Trying to keep the whole thing simple to give an impression of the harbour.

Lastly – Materials Used

The little oil painting was painted using Winsor & Newton, Artists’ oil paints on canvas board, using round and flat brushes.
The sketch of Coverack was produced on Daler Rowney, Langton 9 x 12” Hot Pressed watercolour paper, using Winsor & Newton, watercolour tubes of paint, with a black watercolour pencil and chalk pastel.
