People Sketching
Sketches of people in a variety of settings. This was a period when the only way to get my baby son to have an afternoon nap, was to put him in the car and drive. Nothing else worked very well. So I would give him his lunch, make some sandwiches for myself, and drive off somewhere. For my sanity, I drove to different places to sit in the car. Eating my lunch and sketching whatever was outside.
Waiting at Topsham Station
Pen & Brushpen ~ A5
Riding the rails today on a ‘big expedition’, with the ‘little fella’ between Exmouth & Topsham on the Avocet Line (Devon). Bit warmer today, but still a chilly wind. R still enjoys himself though. This sketch is waiting on the platform to get the train back to Exmouth.
Materials Used
I have been using a waterproof fineliner pen, a black brush pen and 6B pencil. I’m also using my trusty Winsor & Newton, watercolour field paint box, with a couple of round brushes – sable no.6 & a no.1. These are mostly in an A5 Daler Rowney, Red & Yellow cartridge pad.
Admiring the view

Parked up along Exmouth seafront. This couple were sat next to the car enjoying the slightly chilly sunshine. Now it’s time to wake up the ‘little lad’ so that he doesn’t get to much sleep!
On the phone
Pen & Wash, A5
Sat in the car in Tesco’s car park, sketching this chap who is sat outside fiddling with his phone. Seems to be the thing to do these days if you have nothing else to do.
Fish & Chip lunch
Watercolour, A5
Eating fish & chips overlooking the flood tide at Exmouths Estuary Beach. Attracting dogs, but no seagulls! Where were they then?
Warm sunny day, flocks of birds on the estuary, with an egret probing on the edge of the tide.
Just fishing
Watercolour, A5
I’m sitting sketching a restful scene, with this chap quietly fishing in his lunch hour.
Today I am parked at the Exeter Ship Canal’s ‘Swing Bridge’. Waiting for the ‘little fella’ to wake from his lunchtime nap. So we can then head on up to Granmas.
Boys on bikes
Brush & Ink + Pen, A5
Another sunny afternoon at Budleigh Salterton. A sketch of some ‘boys on bikes’ – as my Mum would say.
They have sat next to the ‘no cycling’ sign – some things never change.
A little light lunch
Watercolour, A5.
Parked at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otterton, sketching a lady sat on the opposite river bank eating her sandwiches.
Bit of a damp grey day today.
Nuthatches are still flitting backwards and forwards, feeding their young in the chestnut tree. Also, a flock of Long Tailed Tits have arrived, plus some House Martins swooping above the river catching insects.
We’re off in a minute, when the ‘little fella’ wakes up, to look at the waterwheel, chickens and ducks at the Mill.
Waiting for the bus
Pen, A5
Well, it’s another great day weather-wise. We are nestled in the shade of the trees in Topsham’s car park.
I’m sketching a lady over the road. Who is waiting for her bus and is maybe getting nervous that I keep staring at her. Ah good here’s her bus to whisk her away from strange bearded artists!
Finally
Washing day
Watercolour & Brush Pen, A5
Hanging out the washing at Lympstone ~ on the beach.
The little cottages fronting the estuary don’t have gardens, so all their washing lines are on the beach.
With all their ‘smalls’ for everyone to see.
